Pretty weird how the right/religious will have 75-80 seats in the Knesset, which is, i believe, the highest ever, and the infighting will still prevent forming a solid right-wing coalition.
It seems to be that the right-left mechanic that is so prevalent in many countries is almost non-existent in Israel. Israel was founded by secular Jews but so many of them have simply died out or moved away. Even the Arab citizens barely vote and those that do may sometimes vote for a centrist or even right party.
What is more on the table is the way how to apply Judaism to the Jewish state. The parties always seem to have one opinion or another on how to do this ranging from some Religious Zionists pushing for a Halachic state to Meretz who push for a total separation of Synagogue and state. The mainstream parties range from keeping the status quo to letting each city/area decide for their own.
But putting all this aside. The big thing going on in this election is a referendum on Netanyahu. Theres Likud on one side and Saar/Lapid/Ganz/Huldai/Nissinkorn on the other.
“A referendum on Netanyahu” is stupid. Apart from the fact that Netanyahu dragged Israel, kicking and screaming, from the third world into first.
If you wanted a referendum on Netanyahu, do a PM-only election. Israel tried that before. Three times. All three times a big mess. Just as messy, if not more, than the other way.
… and the funny thing is, if there was a PM-only election, Bibi would win it anyway.
I agree that a referendum on Bibi is stupid as well. A total lack of gratitude is what i would call it… around 10% of all vaccines were given in Israel. Peace with so many Arab countries… Life and peace, what more can one ask for, that he also be humble???
