Additional Questions:
Tomorrow is Netanyahu’s deadline to present a government. If Israel heads to new elections who is at fault?
46% Liberman, 35% Netanyahu, 17% Haredi parties, 2% No opinion
If the crisis is not resolved what should be done?
50% Call new elections, 45% President should give someone else a chance to form a government, 5% No opinion
Well, there are going to be new elections. I hope the New Right joins up with another party like Zehut so that they can cross the threshold this time.
the polls are contradictory they show Liberman gaining seats despite most people blaming him. Bibi will not count Liberman as a partner and Liberman will not get that number of seats. The ones that need to get their act together are Bennett and Feiglin
“the polls are contradictory they show Liberman gaining seats despite most people blaming him”
why is this contradictory? Blame is a synonym for “accountable” – just with a negative connotation.
I blame Liberman also for causing Israel to have fresh elections – and I’m very pleased that he stood up to the Haredi parties and Bibi.
It’s time for the black hatters to serve in the IDF.
your view is good as mine, but he won’t get those seats, and he didn’t stand up to the Haredim, he is a nasty man who has a gripe against Bibi, the Haredim were a fig leaf. Now do your maths, Shas and UTJ voters are not going over to him, Likud no way, Peretz, no, Bennett no, Feglin no, who have you got Kahlon doubtful. The poll is a fake as far as Liberman is concerned . The next election will have a right religious majority without this bother some twit who was all mouth and no delivery in his previous ministerial roles
“and he didn’t stand up to the Haredim”
The Haredim disagree with you on that. The Haredim did not want to agree to the draft law in its original wording and Lieberman did not compromise on that. They wanted to form a government without agreeing to the draft law in its original wording. And Lieberman stood up to both Bibi and the Haredim by insisting on the original wording.
I said that he stood up to Bibi and the Haredim. And he did.
“he is a nasty man”
I agree. I think almost every politician who leads a party in Israel (or in any country on earth) is pretty nasty. It’s a job requirement – not de jure but de facto. Politics is a very nasty business.
“the Haredim were a fig leaf”
Maybe a fig leaf, maybe not. But nobody can doubt that Lieberman stood his ground on something that many Israelis strongly desire: Haredim to serve in greater numbers in the IDF.
“Now do your maths, Shas and UTJ voters are not going over to him, Likud no way, Peretz, no, Bennett no, Feglin no, who have you got Kahlon doubtful.”
Oh I never said that Lieberman was going to benefit politically. Not sure why this matters? Are you saying that politicians should only stand their ground if they benefit politically? If Lieberman does not make it past the electoral threshold in Sept elections and does NOT enter the next Knesset then that would only further support my point which is that Lieberman stood on principle and stood up for the beliefs of millions of Israelis, most of whom did not even vote for him.
“The next election will have a right religious majority”
I hope so! And I have little doubt your expectation will prove accurate.
I doubt Shaked will stay in New Right but I hope to G-d she does.
Bennett and Shaked are the best one-two punch in Israeli politics.
Israel is now a country of deep political divides between liberals and conservatives, between government and the governed, between “haves” and “have-nots,” between inner city and urban, between religious and secular between datim and charedim , and between cultures, races, and ethnicities (Aschkenazi and Sephardi). It is very sad that politicians are using and spreading these divisions to further their political career.
Shlomo, Lieberman stance as being a hard line secularist is a new phenomena. Of course the reason Lieberman is doing this is to benefit politically. To suggest that this is about principles is being disingenuous.
Actually, I found this relatively new serious divide between the two religious sides very sad – until relatively recently, there were really no serious differences between them on religious issues except for Sherut lemui. In fact, if you read Rav Solvechick’s lectures to the religious Zionists in America (in yiddish!), you will see that the religious Zionists were once attacked with the same viciousness now being used against the Chareidim. The fact that there is no longer a common word for two groups that basically believe the same thing is sad. The New York Times actually called Mizrachi (in 1947) ultra-orthodox!
Do we really have an ashkenazi-sephardi divide when almost every wedding in Israel is one of each?
Lieberman always struck me that way, which is why he always worried me.
